Series of flags created by middle-school students based on animals in the Wagner’s natural history collection.
Over the course of 6 class sessions, I introduced students to nautical semaphore flags, abstract painting, and aspsometism (warning colors in animals). Students then chose a personal trait and explored the Wagner collection to find an animal that embodied that trait. They created an abstract composition in felt to represent the animal, and sewed it onto canvas, signaling one facet of their identity through animal symbolism.
